April 26, 2021: BART LAB member, Smriti Bohara has passed her Master Thesis Defense. Her research was done at the Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio, USA under the collaboration between Mahidol University and CASE. Thesis topic: “Ultrasound Triggered Affinity-Drug Release From Β-Cyclodextrin Hydrogels for Infection Control.”

Jan 12, 2021: Thai Cabinet has approved RoboCup 2022 to be a national event. Prof. Jackrit Suthakorn, Executive Director, Center for Biomedical and Robotics Technology (BART LAB) will take lead as the “General Chair” of RoboCup 2022, and Mahidol University will be the main host. RoboCup 2022 will be organized under the direct support from the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MHESI), with collaborations from several universities and govt agencies, private sectors, TRS, CoRE, NCC IE, and more.

BART LAB joins the First World Robot Summit 2018.

October 17-21, 2018: BART LAB Rescue Robotics Team with nine members has visited Tokyo, Japan for the rescue robot league, Standard Disaster Robotics Challenge.  The team joins the competition, and could selected for World Robot Summit 2020.
The World Robot Summit (WRS) consists of two parts: World Robot Challenge (WRC), a robot competition in which teams from all over the world compete in 4 categories where use of robots is highly expected; and the World Robot Expo (WRE), an exhibition that features advanced robots and robotic technologies and provides a glimpse of robots working in the present and in the future.

The moto is to hosting many participants and visitors at WRS2018 who will come together to see, experience, and learn about robotics and discuss how people and robots will live together in the future. The WRS2020 which will be held in 2020 in Aichi and Fukushima Prefectures.

Thailand towards to roboCup 2021

October 3, 2018: Dr. Jackrit Suthakorn along with team executives represented a first press conference on RoboCup 2021, Bangkok. In this meeting the importance and nation’s development impact on RoboCup 2021 was discussed.

RoboCup is an international scientific initiative with the goal to advance the state of the art of intelligent robots. When established in 1997, the original mission was to field a team of robots capable of winning against the human soccer World Cup champions by 2050. Since 1997 every year RoboCup held in various part of the world.

Rachot Phuengsuk, a BART LAB member, defended for his Master Thesis

September 20, 2018: Mr. Rachot Phuengsuk has defended his Master thesis on the topic: “Electronics and Controls in Surgical Robot Systems.” Rachot has completed his Master degree in Biomedical Engineering at Mahidol University on August 8, 2014. Rachot has been working in parallel as a researcher at BART LAB Rescue Robot Team and took part in numerous robot challenges and competitions like Robocup, Robot@Home

BART LAB / NIST Standard Test Methods for Response Robots

August 31, 2018: BARTLAB developed a US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) based comprehensive set of standard test methods and associated performance metrics to quantify key capabilities for a Royal Thai Army funded project.

The objective is to develop an Asian National Institute of Standards and Technology (ANIST) based comprehensive set of standard test methods. In this phase we develop and shown 25 sets of standard test methods for robot mobility, manipulation, sensors, energy, communications, operator proficiency, logistics and safety for remotely operated ground, aerial, and aquatic systems.

June 27, 2018, Dr. Jackrit Suthakorn was Invited to deliver a talk on “Wearable and Assistive Robots Workshop” in the 11th Hamlyn Symposium on Medical Robotics, Imperial college, London UK. The talk entitled “Design of the 2nd Iteration of BART LAB LL-EXO”. Hamlyn Symposium is one of the world’s prestigious symposium regarding medical robotics innovations and applications. This promises to be a compelling contest between some of the leading surgical robotics groups from around the world.

Prof. Jackrit Suthakorn Particapted as a Member Trustee of RoboCup 2018

On 17-21, 2018: Prof Jackrit Suthakorn particapted as a Member Trustee of Robocup 2018, Monteral, Canada. Prof Jackrit Suthakorn was working and being as a very active member for last 12 years in Robocup federation. He and his team take part in Robocup every year since last 12 years. Eventually, he became one of the trustee member in the Robocup federation.
December 12-16, 2017, the first RoboCup Asia Pacific held in Bangkok, Thailand. RoboCup is an international scientific initiative with the goal to advance the state of the art of intelligent robots. It was host and organized by BART LAB and Faculty of Engineering, Mahidol University. Prof. Jackrit Suthakorn is the General Chair for RCAP 2017.
Over the success and showing the capabilities in RCAP 2017, Prof. Jackrit and his team bid for 2021 world Robocup in Thailand and finally succeeded. During the bidding a number of supporters from Thai Govt had joined with us such as, the Ambassador of Thailand to Canada, VP from NSTDA, directors from Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, Customs, and Thai Consular.

Prof. Jackrit Suthakorn and Korn Borvorntanajanya (Master Student - Distinction Program) take part in The International Conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA) Brisbane, Australia, May 21-25, 2018.  The conference is the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society’s flagship conference and is a premier international forum for robotics researchers to present their work.
The presented topic entitled “Hall Effect Sensing Workspace Estimation with Non-Permanent Magnetic Needle for Eye Anesthesia Training System via Robotic Experiments”.

First RoboCup Asia Pacific 2017 (RCAP 2017), held in Bangkok, Thailand

December 12-16, 2017, the first RoboCup Asia Pacific held in Bangkok, Thailand. RoboCup is an international scientific initiative with the goal to advance the state of the art of intelligent robots. When established in 1997, the original mission was to field a team of robots capable of winning against the human soccer World Cup champions by 2050. Since 1997 every year RoboCup held in various part of the world. In RoboCup 2015 board of trustee decided to conduct RoboCup event continental base as a result the First RoboCup Asia Pacific 2017 (RCAP) held at BITEC, Bangkok, Thailand and its was host and organized by BART LAB and Faculty of Engineering, Mahidol University. Dr. Jackrit Suthakorn is the General Chair for RCAP 2017 and Trustee at RoboCup Federation.

Mr. Shen has been accepted to join the Imperial College, London, UK under Government Scholarship toward his advanced degree (PhD)

September 25, 2017, Mr. Shen receives his B.Eng. and M.Eng. in Biomedical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering at the Mahidol University under the guidance of Dr. Jackrit Suthakorn for his research at BART LAB. Later on, he has joined the BART LAB as a research assistant, Mr. Shen got Department of Biomedical Engineering Scholarship for his Ph.D to study abroad, 1st October 2017  Mr. Shen start his Ph.D. program under guidance of Prof Guang-Zhong Yang, Hamlyn Centre, Imperial College, London.
Professor Guang-Zhong Yang, PhD, FREng is Director and Co-founder of the Hamlyn Centre for Robotic Surgery, Deputy Chairman of the Institute of Global Health Innovation, Imperial College London, UK. Professor Yang also embraces a number of key academic positions at Imperial – he is Director and Founder of the Royal Society/Wolfson Medical Image Computing Laboratory, co-founder of the Wolfson Surgical Technology Laboratory, chairman of the Centre for Pervasive Sensing.

These test methods address responder-defined requirements for robot mobility, manipulation, sensors, energy, communications, operator proficiency, logistics and safety for remotely operated ground, aerial, and aquatic systems.

Prof. Rosa HM Chan, Assistant Professor, University of Hong Kong

June 6, 2017, Prof. Rosa H.M. Chan visited BART LAB to observe in detail of the research in medical robotics in Thailand and to have a talk about research collaboration possibilities.
Dr. Rosa H. M. Chan is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Electronic Engineering at City University of Hong Kong. Her research interests include computational neuroscience, neural prosthesis and brain-computer interface applications.
Dr. Chan was the Chair of the Hong Kong-Macau Joint Chapter of IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBS) in 2014 and is recently elected to the IEEE EMBS AdCom as Asia Pacific Representative (2018-2020).

Thai-UK Mahidol-Strathclyde Transnational Education Program

May 25, 2017, The University of Strathclyde and Mahidol University have established the THAI-UK: Mahidol-Strathclyde Transnational Education Program. This program will start in this upcoming semester. The objective of this program is not only to produce graduates with research and entrepreneurial mind set through the transnational education, and also to support the government policy to make Thailand the new value-based economy country or "Thailand 4.0".

BART LAB “SurgySim”, was awarded the ‘Thailand Young Inventor Award - First Runner Up.’

Feb 6, 2017: Miss Nantida Nillahoot, a PhD Candidate, and her research group from BART LAB were awarded the “Thailand Young Inventor Award - The First Runner Up” at the Thailand Inventors’ Day 2017, BITEC, Bangkok, for their R&D project on the “SurgySim”, A Virtual Reality Based Surgical Training System with Force Feedback. The SurgySim was developed under the collaboration between BART LAB, Department of Biomedical Engineering, and Department of Surgery, Ramathibodi Hospital, with the following advisors: Dr.Jackrit Suthakorn, Miss Choladawan Moonjaita and Prof.Chumpol Wilasrusmee, MD.

The President of Kyoto University, and Executives visited BART LAB

Feb 4, 2017: Prof. Juichi Yamagiwa, the President of Kyoto University, Japan, and his executives paid a visit to Prof. Udom Kachintorn, the President of Mahidol University at the Office of the President, Mahidol University to follow up Double Degree Collaboration between Kyoto Engineering and Mahidol Engineering.
In the same event, Prof. Yamagiwa, the President of Kyoto University also visited the Faculty of Engineering at Mahidol University, and the BART LAB. Prof. Yamagiwa was really impressed about research at BART LAB, and was immediately discussing on possible collaboration between BART LAB and Kyoto University, especially, in Medical Robotics and Medical Devices.

January 11, 2016: According to The Opening Ceremony of The Kyoto University Partnership Office in Mahidol University  and the Launching of  Double Degree Program in Environmental and Water Resources Engineering between Mahidol University, Faculty of Engineering and Kyoto University, Graduate School of Global Environmental Studies. BART LAB was invited to exhibit and demonstrate research prototypes of medical robotics projects for the ceremony. BART LAB Director and Engineering faculties visited Tottori Prefectural Government, Japan for Developing the Collaboration in Medical Device Industry

During 10-11 December, 2015, Asst. Prof. Jackrit Suthakorn, Dean of Faculty of Engineering, Dr. Sanitta Thongpang, Assistant Dean and Lect. Choladawan Moonjaita Acting Director of Center for Biomedical and Robotics Technology were invited to visit Tottori Prefectural Government, Japan for discussing with governor in terms of collaboration in medical device industry. The well-known Japan Broadcasting Corporation, NHK News interviewed to Dean of Faculty of Engineering in the focus of further strengthen cooperation for human resources development in medical device industry between the Faculty of Engineering, Mahidol University and Tottori Prefectural Government, Japan after signed MOU in November. Later on, the group visited four world leading companies from Tottori Prefecture (Sanyo Co., Ltd., Japan Display Inc., Onkyo Pioneer Co., Ltd., and Ohtori Kiko Co., Ltd.) and The University Hospital of the Faculty of Medicine at Tottori University.

BART LAB Demo the ORTHOBOT at “Promongkutklao Hospital Establishment Day” event

November 23, 2015: BART LAB was invited to participate in the event of Academic Conference of Phramongkutklao Hospital and 63rd Phramongkutklao Hospital Establishment Day. November 19, 2015: Entrepreneurs and representative of Prefectural Government, Tottori, Japan visited Faculty of Engineering, Mahidol University to discuss about the collaboration on the medical device industry. After the discussion, BART LAB as the Excellence Center of Medical Robotics and Medical Device in Thailand demonstrated research prototypes to all the participants. Delegates also witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding on cooperation in Medical Device Industry at Faculty of Engineering, Mahidol University.

September 25-29, 2015: Panasonic Corporation, Japan under the leading of Mr. Masanobu Matsuda, President of Panasonic Production Engineering Co., Ltd. And Dr. Yoshihiko Namba, Director of Analysis Center, Panasonic paid an official visit to Faculty of Engineering, Mahidol University, discussing about the action plan of Thailand-Japan cooperation on research, testing, certifying and commercializing personal care robotic products. BART LAB as the Excellence Center of Medical Robotics was host of the meeting and the group of representative visited BART LAB to observe the research projects in medical robotics.

BART LAB Rescue Robotics Team is heading for World RoboCup 2015 in China
July 15, 2015: BART LAB Rescue Robotics Team is leaving Bangkok Int’l Airport for the World RoboCup 2015 held at Hefei, China from July 18-22, 2015. The team consists of 3 faculty members, 3 research assistants and 10 graduate students. BART LAB will join RoboCup Rescue Robot League for the major league competition with 2 robots, TeleOp IV and AutoBot III. The main supports are from TCELS – Ministry of Science and Technology, Mahidol University and PEA. Thanks for all the support from every organization.

Panasonic Corp, Japan holds a Technical Transfer Seminar under TCELS-Mahidol-Panasonic MOU
July 8-11, 2015: Panasonic Corporation, Japan under the leading of Dr. Yoshihiko Namba, Director of Analysis Center, Panasonic, Osaka with six technical specialists have held a technical transfer seminar on “The Industrial Development of Medical Robots and Thailand’s Strategic Direction: Case Studies of Panasonic HOSPI and Robotic Bed, Resyone.” Panasonic has brought two drug deliver robots, HOSPI, and one robotic bed, Resyone for demonstration in the seminar as well. BART LAB, Mahidol University has hosted the seminar with the support from TCELS. The seminar has held at the Auditorium 411, Mahidol Learning Center in Mahidol University Salaya Campus with more than 40 participants from several organizations, such as, TISI, NECTEC-National Electronics and Computer Technology Center of Thailand, PTEC, Supreme Company, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Faculty of Medicine Ramathibodi Hospital and more. The seminar is held under the MOU for TCELS-Mahidol-Panasonic collaborations.

Dr. Jackrit Suthakorn, BART LAB Director, has been appointed to become the “Dean of Engineering”
June 16, 2015: Dr. Jackrit Suthakorn, BART LAB Director, has been appointed to become the Dean of Engineering at Mahidol University after going through the university recruiting process. The position will be started on July 27, 2015. Dr. Jackrit Suthakorn has begun his career as a faculty member after his Ph.D. graduation at the Johns Hopkins University in 2003. In 2005, he and his colleagues from various department have established BART LAB as the first multi-disciplinary research lab in Faculty of Engineering, Mahidol University. BART LAB is then lifted to become the Center for Biomedical and Robotics Technology at the same level as a department. Dr. Jackrit is a co-founder of the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Mahidol University in 2006, and becomes the first Department Chair for eight years. The Department of Biomedical Engineering at Mahidol University is the first, and the only BME department in Thailand up to now. Currently, the Mahidol BME program has become one of the most competitive engineering programs among the top engineering in Thailand.  Dr. Jackrit is also held the position of “President” of Thai Robotics Society from 2007-2009. He is also the member of Board of Directors at TOT and PEA in 2013-2014. Currently, he is an Executive Committee of RoboCup Federation in Rescue Robot League.

The press conference is held at the S31 Hotel in Sukumwit Road, Bangkok.

April 7-10, 2015: BART LAB Rescue Robotics Team with nine members has visited Teheran, IRAN for the rescue robot league.  The team joins the competition, and could win the 2nd runner-up trophy.

Two BART LAB members have been accepted to join the Tokyo Institute of Technology toward their advanced degrees.
March-April, 2015: Miss Bantita Treepong and Mr. Theparit Peerasathien, two BART LAB members, have been accepted to join the programs toward their Ph.D. studies at the Tokyo Institute of Technology. Miss Bantita receives her B.Eng. in Biomedical Engineering at the Mahidol University under the guidance of Dr. Jackrit Suthakorn for her research at BART LAB. Later on, she has joined the BART LAB as a research assistant for about a year working on 3D Illustrator and Product Designer. Mr. Theparit receives his M.Sc. in Computer Science from the University of Pennsylvania, USA. He has joined BART LAB as a research assistant to develop 3D Virtual Reality Surgical Training System with Haptics features. He has also joined the BART LAB Rescue Robotics Team to attend the World RoboCup 2014 in Brazil which has won the Third Prize in RoboCup Rescue Robot League with the other members.

A Rep of Mazor Robotics Renaissance Visited BART LAB

February 3, 2015: Amir Kimel, Area Sales Manager of Mazor Robotics made a tour in the BART LAB after a discussion with Dr. Jackrit Suthakorn on a possibility to acquire a Renaissance Spine Surgical Robotic System. The discussion also included the opportunity for collaborating between BART LAB and Mazor Robotics under the Thailand National Advanced Medical Robotics Project.

BART LAB Exoskeleton Project won the 1st Prize BME Innovation Award

January 31, 2015: BART LAB Exoskeleton Project won the First Prize BME Innovation Award at the Thailand BMECON 2015. The event Is organized by Thai BME Research Society.

Prof. Volker Graefe from Bundeswehr University Muenchen, Germany, visited to BART LAB.

January 29, 2015: Prof. Volker Graefe was invited by Dr. Jackrit Suthakorn to give a seminar lecture at the main auditorium, Faculty of Engineering, Mahidol University, on the topic of “Robot Vision and Robot Intelligence”. After the seminar, Prof. Graefe spent about 2 hours to visit through all research stations in the BART LAB.

Prof. Volker Graefe is currently the head of Intelligent Robotics Lab at the Bundeswehr University Muenchen, Germany. He has been a great success roboticist with several major awards and positions in the robotics field, included, the General Chair of IROS ‘94.

Vietnam’s former Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade, Dr. Do Huu Hao leads the delegates from Vietnam NCSTP to visit BART LAB, as a group of country’s guests.

January 26, 2015: A representative group of Vietnam National Council of Science and Technology Policy (NCSTP) has requested the National Research Council of Thailand (NRCT) for an official visit to Thailand for observing the research and industry related to mechanical engineering. The NRCT has been contacted Dr. Jackrit Suthakorn for a discussion on this matter. The conclusion is that BART LAB becomes the site to represent Thailand for the research facility in the Biomedical Robotics Research.

Clinic. Prof. Udom Kachintorn, President of Mahidol University, Prof. Banchong Mahaisavariya, Mahidol VP, and Prof. Sansanee Chaiyaroj Mahidol VP for Research and International Relations had a brief welcome meeting with the delegates from Vietnam NCSTP at the Office of President before the BART LAB visit. The visitors spent about 2 hours to visit the BART LAB.
The visitors included Dr. Do Huu Hao, leader of delegations, a former Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade, Vietnam, Dr. Do Duc Nam, Vice-Director of Secretarial, Vietnam NCSTP, Dr. Nguyen Trong Hieu, Director General of Vietnam National Institute of Patent and Technology Exploitation, Dr. Nguyen Truong Phi, Hanoi University of Science and Technology, and Dr. Nguyen Huu Xugen, National Economics University, Vietnam.

BART LAB Demo Medical Robots at “Thailand – National Road Map for Medical Robotics” Event, organized by TCELS

October 31, 2014: BART LAB was invited to exhibit and demonstrate research prototypes from medical robotics projects at the panel discussion event on “Thailand – National Road Map for Medical Robotics,” held at the Grand Mercure Fortune Hotel, Bangkok. BART LAB was demonstrating several prototyped systems, including; “Surgical Robot, MU-LapaRobot”, “Breast Biopsy Robotic Navigation”, “Drug Logistic Mobile Robot” and “Robotic Tele-Operation Tester,” which was a real-time tele-operated control system to link from the event site to BART LAB (24 km distance). The Thailand Center of Excellence for Life Sciences (TCELS), Ministry of Science and Technology of Thailand, was the host for this event to promote the national road map for medical robotics.

BART LAB Rescue Team and Dr. Jackrit was invited as a keynote speaker at IEEE Response Robotics Workshop in Perth, Australia

September 27-30, 2014: BART LAB Rescue Team was invited to join and demonstrate our Rescue Robot, the TeleOp-VI, at the 2014 IEEE-RAS Response Robotics Summer School and Workshop, held at the Curtin University, Perth, Australia. Dr. Jackrit Suthakorn was also invited to give a talk as a keynote speaker in the event. Prof. Raymond Sheh was the leading organizer to the event.

August 28, 2014: Dr. Namba, Director of Analysis Center from Panasonic Headquarter, Osaka, and Dr. Sanji, Leading Researcher of Mitsubishi Research Institute, lead delegates from both organizations to visit BART LAB for initiating collaborations on research, testing, certifying and commercializing personal care robotic products.

Prof. Marayong from Cal-State Long Beach Take a Sabbatical Leave at BART LAB

August 19-October 21, 2014: Prof. Panadda Marayong, an expert in Haptics from California State University at Long Beach, USA, has spent two-month period for her sabbatical leave at BART LAB. Panadda has also offered a full course on EGBE 662: Design and Control of Haptic Interface for Ph.D. and Master students at the Department of Biomedical Engineering, Mahidol University during her stay. Panadda was one of the first Ph.D. students under guidance of Prof. Alison Okamura, currently at Stanford University, USA.

BART LAB Rescue Robotics Team Joined Several TV Programs for the Real Rescue Experience
August 13, 18 and 25, 2014: BART LAB Rescue Robotics Team was invited to join several TV Programs to share the experience in using the rescue robot for a real search and rescue application as the first time. The TV Programs included; a very popular talk show, “VVIP”, on MCOT (Channel 9), broadcast on August 25, 2014 at 10.45PM, a famous news talk, “Morning Story”, on MCOT (Channel 9), broadcast on August 18, 2014 from 9-9.45AM, and a lived TV program, “Kom Chad Luek”, on National Channel, broadcast on August 13, 2014 at 8.30PM.

BART LAB Rescue Robot in the Real Search and Rescue Mission at Collapsed Building Site in Northern Part of Bangkok
August 11-12, 2014: Around 4PM on August 11, 2014, a BART LAB member was contacted from a member of rescue foundation that a 6-story under-construction condominium building in Pathumthani province, northern part of Bangkok, were collapsed, and a number of workers were still trapped under the collapsed site. It had become a discussion among BART LAB members in a social media whether we should involve in such a real situation. Finally, we had made a decision to join the search and rescue mission, starting by gathering together the BART LAB members at the LAB around 6.30PM. A BART LAB member, Mr. Chawaphol, had been sent to the collapsed site to survey the real location and situation. The rest of members were preparing the robot to fit with the situation as much as possible. Finally, the team left the lab around midnight, and arrived the sited around 2.00AM of August 12, 2014. The collapsed site was a quite a large sized building, which all the concrete floors fall down to pile up as a big sandwich. Therefore, the floor-to-floor height was very low. It is quite difficult for our TeleOp IV rescue robot with 55 cm height to get into between cement sheets. Around 3.30PM, a group of rescue team came to us, and requested for a try to have our robot to get into an open hole to search a victim which they believed that a survival would be below the far-end. Our team had set up a group of members to operate the mission, leading by Dr. Jackrit Suthakorn, Mr. Sakol Nakdhammaborn (Ph.D. student), Mr. Rachot Phuengsuk (Master student), and Mr. Shen Treratanakulchai (Master student) on the collapsed building. Another group of members were supporting at the side of the site, consisting of Miss Choladawan Moonjaita (faculty), Mr. Peerapat Owatchaiyapong (Ph.D. student), Mr. Jitendra Yadav (former Master student), Mr. Branesh Madhavan (Ph.D. student), and Mr. Karat Thanaboonkong (Master student). The TeleOp IV robot could finally get into the hole, and could climb down from cement sheet which was the 6th floor to the 5th floor and the 4th floor after several trails. However, the robot could slowly move on the 4th floor toward the far-end not very long due to the narrowed height between floor-to-floor sheets. The TeleOp IV robot was successfully come out from the hole and site with the operation time about 1.5 hours. The mission had given us a big opportunity to work in a real situation, and work with real rescue personals. We have a very high hope to join any coming training or operation with them in the soon future, moreover, our rescue research group at BART LAB would use the experience to improve our design and development on the next rescue robots for the real applications.

Saqib, a BART LAB member, defended for his Master Thesis

June 4, 2014: Mr. Syed Saqib Hussain Shah has defended his Master thesis on the topic: “A Study on Multi-Modality Communication for Robotic Tele-Surgery.” Saqib has completed his Master degree in Biomedical Engineering at Mahidol University on August 8, 2014. Saqib has been working in parallel as a researcher at BART LAB since 2006.

New Researcher and Ph.D. Student to BART LAB, “Theparit,” a UPenn graduate, and “Branesh,” a new Ph.D. Student from India

May and July, 2014: BART LAB has recruited two new members to work in the lab. (1) Mr. Theparit Peerasathien has joined the BART LAB as a new researcher in May, 2014. Theparit has held a Master degree in Robotics Engineering from University of Pennsylvania, USA. His expertise is in robotic programming, which he was assigned to work on the project of surgical training system with haptic features. (2) Mr. Branesh Madhaven Pillai is our new Ph.D. student from India to join in Mahidol Ph.D. Program in Biomedical Engineering, starting from July, 2014. Branesh is selected and awarded with the BART LAB Research Assistantship for his Ph.D. study.

Mahidol Engineering hosted Thailand Robot@Home Championship 2014

February 14-16, 2014: Dr. Jackrit Suthakorn (Chair), Choladawan Moonjaita (Associate Chair) and BART LAB members, on behalf of Faculty of Engineering, Mahidol University, organized the Thailand Robot@Home Championship 2014 at the SCG Experience in CDC Mall, Bangkok. SCG is the main sponsor to support the event. BART LAB AssistBot Team also participated the event to gain experience in Service Robotic Applications, and won the 3rd place.

Hopkins Visit: BART LAB Director, MU-VP for Research, and TCELS Director Visited LCSR at Johns Hopkins University, USA

December 11, 2013, “Dr. Jackrit Suthakorn,” BART LAB Director, “Dr. Nares Damrongchai,” Director of Thailand Center of Excellence for Life Sciences (TCELS) of Thai Ministry of Science and Technology, “Prof. Prasit Palittapongarnpim,” Vice President for Research of Mahidol University, and Miss Choladawan Moonjaita, BART LAB Manager visited Laboratory for Computational Sensing and Robotics (LCSR) at Johns Hopkins University. Prof. Louis L. Whitcomb (Department Chair of Hopkins Mechanical Engineering and Former LCSR Director) along with Prof. Iulian Iordachita warmly welcome and hosted a meeting to discuss the possibility on collaboration between BART LAB’s new project of “National Center for Advanced Medical Robotics” and Hopkins’s LCSR. A facility tour through LCSR was also arranged at the end. In this opportunity, the Thai delegates had a meal with BART LAB Alumni who were currently studying their Ph.D. at Hopkins; Yuttana Itsrachaiyot, Sureerat Reaungamornrat and Pornpat Athamanolap.

BARTLAB for Kids! BART LAB Robotics Team demonstrated Tele-Operated Rescue Robot and @Home Service Robot at the Kasetsart University Laboratory School, Center of Educational Research and Development

On August 27-28, 2013, as a part of BART LAB Social Responsibility (BLSR) project, BART LAB Robotics Team was invited to demonstrate our Tele-Operation Robot and Robot@Home to Students at the Kasetsart University Laboratory School, Center of Educational Research and Development, Bangkok.

BART LAB Students presented basic knowledge on robotics in the real world, to students from age groups 5-17 years old. Demonstrations of the Tele-Operated Rescue Robot running and searching simulated victims were performed. On the other hand, @Home Service Robot demonstrated moving around, talking and movement interaction with humans. There were many curious questions from the students, which showed their creativity and understanding. Along with that BART LAB members asked questions about robots to encourage participation from the students who visited the booth. BART LAB students received a lot of appreciation from people of the school for their contribution and participation in this event.

Preedipat, A Ph.D. Student from BART LAB, Has Been Awarded a Full Scholarship from ASEAN University Network to Join a 6-Month Exchanging Program at NTU, Singapore

August 19, 2013: Miss Preedipat Sattayasoonthorn, a BART LAB Ph.D. student, has been awarded the 2013 Thai-ASEAN Student Exchange Program Scholarship (Phase II) from the Office of the Higher Education Commission. Preedipat is joining the School of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore to continue her work on the development of liquid crystalline polymer piezoresistive pressure sensors for monitoring intracranial pressure in traumatic brain injury patients; her work will be conducted under the supervision of Associate Professor Miao Jianmin. This is the second period of Predipat to visit the NTU in such program , the first  visit was in 2012 for 6 months.

Yuttana, A BART LAB Member pursues his Ph.D. Study at Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, Maryland, USA

On August 13, 2013,  Mr. Yuttana Itsarachaiyot (Big) flew  to USA for his Ph.D. study. He has been accepted to pursue his Ph.D. degree at the Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, Maryland, USA under Government Scholarship. Mr.Yuttana will be working with Prof. Gregory S. Chirikjian, at the Robot and Protein Kinematics Laboratory, Johns Hopkins University. The Robot and Protein Kinematics Laboratory is also a part of the Laboratory for Computational Sensing and Robotics (LCSR)

BART LAB Annual Retreat 2013 at Novotel Hua Hin Cha Am

On August 5-7, 2013, at Novotel Hua Hin, BART LAB members got together to celebrate the 9th year milestone of research at the Center of Biomedical and Robotics Technology (BART LAB). During the retreat, members presented their on-going research therefore the successes and obstacles they have encountered in the past year. Along with that through a number of team oriented activities, members were able to learn essential skills like, teamwork, planning, and leadership.

BART LAB and THAICOM Foundation Held A Press Conference for The Annual National Level THAICOM RoboCamp by BART LAB Event for 2013

On August 1, 2013, Mahidol University and THAICOM Foundation announced the dates for their third annual “THAICOM RoboCamp by BART LAB” at a press conference in SC Park Hotel. During this press conference the director of BART LAB, Asst. Prof. Jackrit Suthakorn and Ms. Paethongtan Shinawatra, General Secretary of THAICOM talked about the RoboCamp and the benefits of this event for the youth.

This event will select 50 candidates who will participate in this workshop and from the group, 5 participants will be chosen to compete at RoboCup Japan Open 2014. THAICOM RoboCamp by BART LAB will be held on October 24-27, 2013. During this press conference there were presentations from students who had previously participated in this event. Ms. Choladawan Moonjaita, a BART LAB representative, talked about her experience as a mentor to the participants in the past. Moreover, BART LAB also demonstrated our MU-Laparobot system and 3 rescue robot at the event.

The goal of hosting RoboCamp is to teach and transfer basic knowledge of Robotics to the younger generation, in high school. The participants will be taught by BART LAB members, who will convey their knowledge, know-how and experiences through this event. The RoboCamp has in the past and presently continues to receive attention from the press and attendees, nationwide.  

RoboCup 2013 in Eindhoven: BART LAB Robotics Team Participated in Rescue Robot League and Robot@Home League in RoboCup 2013, Eindhoven, Netherlands

On June 24-30, 2013, BART LAB Robotics Team had participated in two leagues; Rescue Robot and Robot@Home leagues, at the RoboCup 2013 held in Eindhoven, Netherlands. BART LAB Robotics team was mainly supported by the “THAICOM Foundation”, “The Crown Properties Bureau of Thailand”, “TOT plc”, “Mahidol Engineering Foundation” and “Mahidol University”. BART LAB Robotics team included 15 members: Prof. Jackrit Suthakorn (Advisor), Yuttana Itsrachaiyot, Sakol Nakdhamabhorn, Watcharawit Saensupho, Rachot Phuengsuk, Nonthachai Suratriyanont, Chawaphol Direkwatana, Choladawan Moonjaita, Peerapat Owatchaiyapong, Syed Saqib Hussain Shah, Shen Treratanakulchai, Pitchaya Rayothee, Nantida Nillahoot, Preedipat Sattayasoonthorn and Karat Thanabooklong.

After attending the RoboCup 2013, the group had visited Paris, France for three days, including, Notre Dame Cathedral, The Eiffel Tower, Palace of Versailles, Champs Elysees & Arc de Triomphe and The Louvre.

Visiting Stanford: BART LAB Members Visited Prof. Okamura’s CHARM Lab at Stanford University, USA

On June 3, 2013, BART LAB Members visited Prof. Okamura’s CHARM Lab, Stanford University. The CHARM Lab (Collaborative Haptics and Robotics in Medicine Laboratory) is a part of the Design and Biomechanics Groups in the Mechanical Engineering Department. CHARM lab has expertise in haptics, sense of touch, applied to tele-operation, virtual environments and robotic manipulation. BART LAB Members, who joined the trip, included Dr. Jackrit Suthakorn (BART LAB Director), Choladawan Moonjaita, Peerapat Owatchaiyapong (Research Staffs),  Chawaphol Direkwatana, Nantida Nillahoot and Narucha Taniutchawoot (Ph.D. student and 2 Master’s students, respectively)

Visiting UCLA: BART LAB Members Visited Center for Advanced Surgical and Interventional Technology (CASIT), UCLA, USA

On May 31, 2013, a group of BART LAB Members visited the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) where they toured several research labs and UCLA facilities, including, (1) Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, (2) UCLA-Center for Advanced Surgical and Interventional Technology (CASIT), (3) Center for Small Bowel Diseases and (4) Communication Lab in UCLA Electrical Engineering Department. Visiting Cal State and VA Medical Center at Long Beach, California, USA

On May 29, 2013, BART LAB Members visited the College of Engineering at California State University, Long Beach, USA. The Dean of the College of Engineering, Prof. Forouzan Golshani, welcome the BART LAB group, and  presented his research facilities, run under his supervision, including, the new Boeing Simulation Cockpit and Simulation Room for Disabled Persons. Moreover, Prof. Christopher Druzgalski, Director of the EE Biomedical Program, shown his work and facility on bioacoustics. Prof. Panadda Marayong  shown her projects on haptics. Later on the same day, BART LAB Members visited the Veteran Affairs (VA) Medical Center to see the Blind Rehabilitation Center. BART LAB Has Sent Undergrad Students to Harvard Medical School, USA and University of Glasgow, UK for 5-Month and 3-Month Exchanging Programs, Respectively

On May 3, 2013, Mr. Korn Borvorntanajanya, an undergrad student who has been working at BART LAB has joined a 5-month exchanging program at the Harvard Medical School, Harvard University in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, under supervision of Prof. Georges El Fakhri. His exchanging program will include conducting a research the field of Nuclear Medical Imaging.
 
On April , 2013, Miss Apichaya Jitpanya, an undergrad student who has been working at BART LAB has joined a 3-month exchanging program at the University of Glaskow, UK, under supervision of Prof. Jon Cooper and Prof. Aleksandra Vuckovic. Her exchanging program. Her exchanging program will include conducting a small research project on Brain-Computer Interface.

BART LAB Director Receives the ‘Certificate of Completion’ from the Thai Institute of Directors (IOD) for Completing the Director Certification Program (DCP 169)

On April 24, 2013, Dr. Jackrit Suthakorn, BART LAB Director was presented the ‘Certificate of Completion’ from Thailand Institute of Directors (IOD) for completing the Director Certification Program in the class of 169/2013 (DCP 169). Dr. Suthakorn was promoted to attend the DCP as a board of TOT PCL (Telecom of Thailand).

BART LAB and Mahidol Biomedical Engineering Made a Partnership Agreement with Thai Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) to Create “National Advanced Medical Robotics Program” with a Budget of “2 Billions Thai Baht (About 70 Millions USD)”

On April 5, 2013, Mr. Woravat Auapinyakul, Minister of Science and Technology of Thailand held a press conference with other MOST Administrators, BART LAB Director and other related partners to announce a new project on “National Advanced Medical Robotics Program” with a budget of “2 Billions Thai Baht (About 70 Millions USD).”

MOST by “Thailand Center of Excellence for Life Sciences” - TCELS (Dr. Nares Damrongchai - TCELS Director) and “National Nanotechnology Center” - NANOTEC (Prof.Dr. Sirirurg Songsivilai, M.D. - NANOTEC Director) have beenworking with BART LAB and Department of Biomedical Engineering (Dr. Jackrit Suthakorn and Dr. Yodchanan Wongsawat), Faculty of Engineering, Mahidol University to develop the focused project on “National Advanced Medical Robotics Program.” The program will promote funded research prototypes in Medical Robotics and Related Fields through commercialized process, including, commercializing research, systemic testing, clinical trailing, medical standard certifying and business planning. Thailand is positioned as the ASEAN regional hub for the advanced medical robot industry. A part of this program will include constructing a new building for the “National Advanced Medical Robotics Center,” located at Mahidol University.

BART LAB Members visit and present Research at the Konkuk University, Seoul, Korea

On March 25, 2013, Nine-BART LAB Members visited Konkuk University in Seoul, Korea. Dr. Jackrit Suthakorn (BART LAB Director), Miss Bantita Treepong and Miss Narucha Tanaiutchawoot (B.Eng. Student in Biomedical Engineering who has been working on research project at BART LAB) gave presentations at the Department of Mechanical Design and Production Engineering, Konkuk University. Dr. Suthakorn presented the overview of BART LAB Medical Robotics Research, and Miss Treepong and Miss Tanaiutchawoot presented their senior research project, a part of an active research at BART LAB, on the topic of “The Design of A Passive Robotic Breast Biopsy Needed Holder and Its 3D Graphical Human-Machine Interaction Based on 3D Slicer.”

Addition to the trip, BART LAB Members were having a pleasured time on Downhill Skiing at the number one, Korean’s Ski Resort, “YongPyong Resort,” located at 3-hour away from Seoul. YongPyong Resort is the largest ski and snowboard resort in Korean, and will host 2018 Winter Olympics.

BART LAB Members attend “KiMES 2013”, Korea International Medical and Hospital Equipment Show in Seoul, Korea

On March 23-24, 2013, BART LAB Members attended the KiMES 2013, Korea International Medical and Hospital Equipment Show, held at COEX Korea Exhibition Center in Seoul, South Korea. The KiMES 2013 included the following hi-lights: Seminar, Exhibition of Latest Medical Equipments, Systems and Products, Services and Technologies. BART LAB Members, who joined the trip, included Dr. Jackrit Suthakorn, BART LAB Director, 3 research-staffs, 3 graduate students and 2 undergrad students.

Woratit Onprasert, A Former BART LAB Member, joins The Amata B.Grimm Power Group

On March 1, 2013, Mr. Woratit Onprasert, a former graduate student and former research scientist at the BART LAB, has joined the Amata B.Grimm Power Group as a pioneer research engineer in the Business Development Department. B.Grimm is one of a longest history Thai Company, founded by European Pharmacists who were appointed to be official pharmacists for the Thai Royal Family in 1878.

BART LAB Ph.D. Student, Miss Chatrasingh, joins 1-Year Exchanging Program at Medical University of Vienna, Austria with Full Scholarship from Austrian Government

On February 28, 2013, Miss Maria Chatrasingh, A Ph.D. Student in the BART LAB under the Ph.D.-M.D. Program from Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, has departed Bangkok International Airport to Vienna Austria.

She is joining a one-year exchanging program at the Medical University of Vienna, Austria, under the guidance of Prof. Wolfgang W. Birkfellner, a world-classed expert on medical tracking and navigation system. Maria will be assigned to work under a project, “Deformable Image Registration for Contour Propagation in Adaptive Radiotherapy.” Maria has been awarded a full scholarship to support her exchanging program by the Austrian Government under the Technology Grant of The Austrian Federal Ministry of Science and Research.

BART LAB Organizes The 2012 International Robotics Research Workshop (IRRW2012) at Pattaya Marriot Resort
On December 16-18, 2012, BART LAB organizes the 2012 International Robotics Research Workshop (IRRW2012) at Pattaya Marriot Resort and Spa. The IRRW2012 is the 3rd IRRW which is formerly known as the International Rescue Robot Workshop. This year, the IRRW2012 is organized in combining of invited lectures and hands-on workshops on Rescue Robots and Home Service Robots.

BART LAB Robotics Team the Best Autonomy Award from Rescue Robot League and Won the Best Technique Award from Robot@Home League at the Thailand Robot Championship 2012
On December 12-14, 2012, BART LAB Robotics Team joins the Thailand Robot Championship 2012 in both Rescue Robot and Robot@Home Leagues. BART LAB Robotics Team under the name of “BART LAB Rescue Team” won the “Best Autonomy Award” from the Rescue Robot League. The award is for Best-In-Class Autonomous Rescue Robot with several autonomous features, such as, autonomously navigate itself through the rough-terrain mesh arena, real-time map generation with SLAM, automatic victim detections. This is the 3rd time in Thailand Championships that BART LAB Rescue Team has been awarded the “Best Autonomy Award.” While the BART LAB Robotics Team under the name of “BART LAB AssistBot” won the “Best Technique Award” from the Robot@Home League. The award is for the best team to score the mandatory tasks; Follow me, Who is who?, Navigation and Manipulation.

On behalf of Mahidol University, BART LAB Organizes the Thailand Robot Championship 2012 (TRC 2012)
On 12-14 December 2012, Mahidol University, Vocational Education Commission and Thai Robotics Society organize the Thailand Robot Championship 2012 with the support from SCG held at the Government Complex Building in Chaengwattana, Bangkok. The Thailand Robot Championship 2012 is the first time in Thailand to combine the famous Thailand Rescue Robot Championship (TRR) and the new Thailand Robot@Home Championship (T@Home) to be in the same event. More than 60 teams to join the TRR in the first round, organized in October, which only 9 Thai Teams and 2 Invited International teams from Japan are advancing to the final round in this December event. 9 Thai Teams and an Invited International team from Netherlands are joining the final round in this event too. Dr. Jackrit Suthakorn, BART LAB Director, Has Been Appointed to Be a Board Member of TOT (Telecom of Thailand)

October 1, 2012, Ministry of Finance has appointed Dr. Jackrit Suthakorn, BART LAB Director, to be a member of ‘Board of Directors’ of TOT PCL, a state enterprise which is the largest telecom-infrastructure provider in Thailand. Dr. Jackrit Suthakorn has been assigned to overlook TOT activities on a major Governmental ICT Policy, “SMART THAILAND,” and also to overlook TOT Strategic Planning.

Deputy Managing Director of N-Health, A Thailand’s Largest Hospital-Chain Management Company, Visited BART LAB

Sept 5, 2012, Dr. Chuchart Vinitwatanakhun and his management team from N-Health visited BART LAB after discussion on signing MOU between N-Health and Mahidol Engineering. N-Health is one of the largest hospital-chain management company in Thailand. The result of this visit leads to a number of possible collaborations between Mahidol Engineering and N-Health.

BART LAB Member Awarded a Full Scholarship from ASEAN University Network to Join a 6-Month Exchanging Program at NTU, Singapore

August 25, 2012, Miss Preedipat Sattayasoonthorn, a BART LAB Ph.D. student, has been awarded a full scholarship from ASEAN University Network (AUN) to join a 6-month exchanging program at the School of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. Preedipat is planning to conduct research on MEMS Fabrications under guidance of Asst. Prof. Miao Jianmin.

ThaiCom RoboCamp 2012 by BART LAB

On August 2-5, 2012, ThaiCom Foundation and BART LAB (Center for Biomedical and Robotics Technology) organized a robot educational camp,  “ThaiCom RoboCamp 2012 by BART LAB,” at the Faculty of Engineering, Mahidol University. 50 high school students were selected to join the workshop. During the workshop, students were taught by the BART LAB members: Faculty Members, Research Staffs and Students to understand the basic knowledge, design and implementation on Robotics. This year, the final challenge was to design and develop a autonomous “Flying Robot.” After 4 days and 3 nights of the intensive camp, 6 high school students were carefully selected to be the Thailand’s representatives to join the 2012 World Robot Olympiad (WRO) to be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on November 9-11, 2012.

BART LAB and ThaiCom Foundation Held A Press Conference to Organize a Robot Teaching Camp, “ThaiCom RoboCamp 2012 by BART LAB”

On June 27, 2012, BART LAB, BART LAB - Mahidol University and ThaiCom Foundation held a press conference at the SC Park Hotel to announce the Second Robot Teaching Camp, “ThaiCom RoboCamp 2012 by BART LAB.” Paethongtan Shinawatra General Secretary of ThaiCom Foundation, Dr. Jackrit Suthakorn, Executive Director of BART LAB,  Mr. Yuttana Itsrachaiyos, BART LAB representative and Ms. Pichatorn Suppakitjanusant, former attendance from 2011 Camp’s representative were on the press conference.

The RoboCamp is to teach and transfer basic knowledge on Robotics to the younger generations in high school level, teaching by BART LAB students and members with their knowledge, know-how and experiences. The RoboCamp becomes an annual event, which have been received big attentions from press and attendances, nation wide.   

50 students will be selected from all over the country to join a 4-days/3-nights workshop at the BARTLAB, Faculty of Engineering, Mahidol University. Among them, 6 students will be selected to be the country’s representatives to join the World Robot Olympiad 2012 in Malaysia.

Mahidol’s President and NBTC Visited BART LAB

On June 7, 2012 Prof. Rajata Rajatanavin, M.D., the President of Mahidol University and Dr. Prawit  Leesathapornwongsa, Board Member of National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission  (NBTC) paid a visit to BART LAB and other BME Labs for the Opening Ceremony of the Medical Communications Center. NBTC has given a One-Million-USD grant to support BART LAB and other BME Labs at the Faculty of Engineering, Mahidol University for their research equipment and apparatus under the project name, “Medical Communications Center.” BART LAB has received a part of the grant to serve the BART LAB Tele-Surgery project. BART LAB has demonstrated several subprojects to the delegates including;
(1) Haptic Laparoscopic Surgical Training System,
(2) Ultrasound Breast Biopsy Navigation System,
(3) Fluoro-Navigation for the Femur Closed Intramedullary Nailing Using Robot-Guidance,
(4) Colonoscopic EMF Tracking System and
(5) MU-LapaRobot.

Graduating Defense Period for Four BART LAB Members

On May 21, 2012, Mr. Wirawat Sirisopha, Mr. Nattaporn Intawachirarat and Mr. Sakol Nakdhamabhorn had their Master Thesis defenses. In the morning period, Mr. Wirawat was presenting the thesis topic of “A Study of Rotary-Brake Design for Utilizing in Motorized Upper Limb Prosthesis,” and Mr. Nattaporn was presenting the thesis topic of “Foot Clearance During Free Swing of a Transfemoral Prosthetic Leg: Four-Bar Knee vs. Ankle Dorsiflexion.” The committee for both presentations included Emeritus Professor Direk Israngkul, M.D., country’s leading professor in orthopedics field from the Prosthesis Foundation, Prof. Panya Kaimuk, M.D., former Dean, Faculty of Sport Sciences, Mahidol University, Dr. Jonathon Sengsinger from Rehabilitation Institue of Chicago and Northwestern University, USA, Prof. Warakorn Chareonsuk from Smart Motion and Rehabilitation Technology Lab (SMART LAB), Mahidol University and Prof. Jackrit Suthakorn, Major-Advisor.

In the afternoon period, Mr. Sakol was presenting his thesis reseach on the topic of “System Integration of A Robot-Assisting Surgical Guidance System for Distal Locking Process in Closed Intramedullary Nailing of Femur,” to the committee, including Prof. Banchong Mahaisavariya, M.D., orthopedic surgical expert from Siriraj Hospital and Dean, Faculty of Graduate Studies, Mahidol University, Prof. Pudit Laksanachareon from King Mongkut’s University of Technology North Bangkok, Prof. Songpol Ongwatanakul, Vice Dean for IT, Faculty of Engineering, Mahidol University and Prof. Jackrit Suthakorn, Major-Advisor.

On May 24, 2012, Mr. Yuttana Itsarachaiyot was presenting his thesis research on the topic of “Haptic Interaction of Laparoscopic Surgery in Virtual Environment,” to the committee, including Prof. Chumpol Leelalusmee, M.D., leading surgeon from Ranathibodi hospital, Prof. Djitt Laowatana, founder of FIBO, King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi, Prof. Warkorn Chareonsuk and Prof. Jackrit Suthakorn, Major-Advisor.
Four of them were passed the final thesis defenses and received the Master Degrees in Biomedical Engineering from the Department of Biomedical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Mahidol University.

BART LAB Robotics Team won the First Runner Up in Rescue Robot League in RoboCup Japan Open 2012

On May 2-5, 2012 at Osaka, Japan, BART LAB Robotics Team had participated in two leagues, Rescue Robot and Robot@Home leagues, in the RoboCup Japan Open 2012 held at the Osaka Institute of Technology. The BART LAB Rescue team was the 2-consecutive-year Champion in Japan Open 2010 and 2011. This year in 2012, the Shinobi team from Kyoto University closely won the first prize above BART LAB Rescue team in the very final run. The Nexis-R team from Nagaoka University came the third while their robots were fully commercialized for real applications already.

BART LAB Robotics team has joined the Rescue Robot League at the RoboCup Japan Open since 2009. BART LAB has achieved several titles from the RoboCup Japan Open as following: In 2009, BART LAB received “SICE Award” from Society of Instrumentation and Control Engineers and “The First Runner Up”; In 2010, BART LAB received “The First Prize”; In 2011, BART LAB received “The First Prize”; and In 2012, BART LAB received “the First Runner Up.”
The BART LAB Assist Bot team had attended the Robot@Home League while the programs were not very ready. However, the BART LAB Assist Bot team performed a reasonable demonstration.

The BART LAB Robotics team was mainly supported by the THAICOM Foundation, the Crown Properties Bureau of Thailand and Mahidol University. The BART LAB Robotics team members to Japan consisted of 17 mebers: Prof. Jackrit Suthakorn (Advisor), Yuttana Itsrachaiyot, Woratit Onprasert, Sakol Nakdhamabhorn, Watcharawit Saensupho, Rachot Phuengsuk, Nonthachai Suratriyanont, Chawaphol Direkwatana, Choladawan Moonjaita, Peerapat Owatchaiyapong, Syed Saqib Hussain Shah, Shen Treratanakulchai, Pitchaya Rayothee, Nantida Nillahoot, Maria Chatrasing, Preedipat Sattayasoonthorn and Karat Thanabooklong.
Prof. Kimura of Nagaoka University of Technology and Prof. Oogane of Niigata University were the representatives from organizing committee to invite us to attend a special welcome dinner.

The 2012 Mahidol BME Open House at Digital Gateway 2012, Siam Square, Bangkok

On April 21-22, 2012, Department of Biomedical Engineering, Mahidol University held a research exhibition at Digital Gateway, Siam Square, Bangkok, on the Senior’s Projects from BME Undergrad Students and BME Lab Introduction. This is the 2nd Annual Event for Biomedical Engineering Open House. The guests of honor included PM’s Office Minister Worawat Auapinyakul, Mahidol University’s VP, Prof. Prasit Palittapongarnpim, M.D., Pantip Plaza CEO Yongyut Chaichana and BME Dept Chair, Dr. Jackrit Suthakorn. The Undergrad Student’s Senior Projects under BART LAB supervision to be exhibited in this event were: Project #1: Design and Implementation of A New Motorized-Mechanical Exoskleton Based on CGA Patternized Control by Wankwan Banchadit, Auchara Temram and Tassanai Sukwan, and Project #2: Simulation and Image Reconstruction for Magnetic Resonance Imaging by Shen Treratanakulchai.

Dr. Jackrit Suthakorn, BART LAB Exec Director Was Awarded the  “Outstanding Academic Personnel of The Year Award” by Mahidol University.

On March 2, 2012, the Mahidol University Day, Dr. Jackrit Suthakorn was awarded the “Outstanding Academic Personnel of They Year Award” by the Mahidol University. Dr. Jackrit was selected to be the 2012 Outstanding Academic Personnel among the faculty members in the Faculty of Engineering. Later on, the Mahidol University had interviewed and selected Dr. Jackrit to be the “Mahidol University’s Outstanding Academic Personnel of the Year” from every Faculties and Institutes in Mahidol University.

Mr. Supawat Sarakankosol, a BART LAB Member, joined the Dueble-A Company for a Research Position.

On Febrary 1, 2012, Mr. Supawat Sarakankosol had joined the Double-A Company as a pioneer researcher group in Robotics Research Sectioned.

BART LAB’s Robot to Real Field: The Royal Thai Navy acquires a new BART LAB-Made EOD Robot.

On January 22, 2012, Beyond our dreams, it has become an achievement. Prof. Jackrit Suthakorn (BART LAB Exec. Director) and Prof. Worawit Israngkul (Dean, Faculty of Engineering) are the representatives from Mahidol University delivered BARTLAB-Navy EOD Robot to the Navy Research and Development office (NRDO) of The Royal Thai Navy under the Support from SCG.

This robot is scheduled to join the Thai Marine's EOD search and destroy teams for the real field use in the Southern Border of Thailand.

BART LAB AssistBot Team Won The “Best Creativity Award” in The 2011 Thailand Robot@Home Championship

On January 20-22, 2012, BART LAB AssistBot Team, a Robot@Home Team, participated the 2011 Thailand Robot@Home Championship, and went through the Final Round along with other 7 teams. "BART LAB AssistBot Team" from BART LAB, Mahidol University won the "Best Creativity Award."

BART LAB is the Main Organizer for the First RoboCup Thailand Robot@Home

On January 20-22, 2012, Thai Robotics Society, SCG and Mahidol University by BART LAB and Department of Biomedical Engineering co-organized the final round of Thailand Robot@Home 2011 competition which is the latest robot league in Thailand. On December 24-25, 2011, the qualify round was held at Mahidol University, Salaya. There were 14 teams from 10 universities to attend the competition.The final round was organized at The Mall Department Store, Ngam Wong Wan. There were only 8 teams selected to the final round. Four main tasks competed on the first day and Grand Open Challenge competed on the last day. According to the total score, "BART LAB/BCI Assistbot Team" from Mahidol University won the "Best Creativity Award" in the competition and  Kor-Kai team from Chulalongkorn University won "The First place" and  Dong-Yang from Prince of Songkla University was "The Runner-Up."

BART LAB Rescue Team demonstrated Tele-Operation Robot at the St. Joseph's Convent School

On January 7, 2012, a part of BART LAB Social Responsibility (BLSR) project, BART LAB Rescue Team was invited to demonstrate our Tele-Operation Robot to 2nd Grade Students at the St. Joseph's Convent School, Silom, Bangkok. BART LAB Staffs and Students presented basic knowledge on robot in the real world. A set of demonstration on Tele-Operation Robot as running and searching targets were performed. There were many curious questions from the G.2 students, which had shown their creativity and understanding.

Piyawan, A BART LAB Member has her Master Defense on Tele-Presentation from NSF ERC-CISST, Johns Hopkins University

On September 19, 2011, at BART LAB: Ms. Piyawan Moonjaita has her “Live” Master defense on Tele-Presentation through Internet from Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, Maryland. She is currently on a 7-month Graduate Student Exchanging Program at the NSF Engineering Research Center for Computer-Integrated Surgical System and Technology, Johns Hopkins under the International Collaboration between BART LAB and NSF ERC-CISST at Hopkins. She has passed her defend with the topic of “Kinematic Analysis and Algorithms for Computer-Integrated Total Knee Replacement Surgery.” The defense committee includes Dr. Jackrit Suthakorn (Advisor), Dr. Yodchanan Wongsawat (Committee Chair), Dr. Panya Kaimuk (Orthopedic Surgeon) and Dr. Yuttapong Jiraraksopakun (External Committee from KMUTT).

BART LAB Technology Transfer Seminar and Factory Visit at Phuket

On September 14-20, 2011, at Phuket, Thailand: 22-BART LAB Members join the trip to Phuket for giving a one-day presentation on “Surgical Robotics Technology Transfer” as a part of BART LAB Technology Transfer Seminar Series at the Andaman Seaview Hotel, Karon Beach, Phuket. BART LAB Member pays a visit at the Novus Factory, a marker of surgical mesh originally from Norway.

BART LAB - Kimura's Lab, NU-Tech Collaboration: Suratana, A BART LAB Member pusues his Ph.D. Study at NU-Tech, Japan

On August 28, 2011, Mr. Suratana (A.K.A. Best) is flying to Japan for his Ph.D. study. He has been accepted to pursue his Ph.D. degree at the Nagaoka University of Technology, Nagaoka, Japan under Monbukagakusho Schalorship. He will be working with Prof. Tetsuya Kimura - Rescue Robotics Lab. This is a part of International Collaboration between BART LAB and Kimura's Lab at Nagaoka University of Technology.

On July 9, 2011 at World RoboCup 2011, Istanbul, Turkey: Dr. Jackrit Suthakorn is officially appointed to become an executive committee for the World RoboCup Rescue Robot League. The position is concurred by the RoboCup Federation Trustee Board.

On July 7-10, 2011 at Istanbul, Turkey: Dr. Jackrit Suthakorn and Dr. Phornphop Naiyanetr have been a part of organizing committee for the World RoboCup Rescue 2011 at Istanbul, Turkey. Mr. Woratit Onprasert and Mr. Rachot Phuengsuk, BART LAB Researchers have joined the Thailand Junior team as mentors to attend the Junior League on Rescue Robot Competition. The Thailand Junior team is the result from the event of “ThaiCom RoboCamp 2011 by BART LAB”. The team has not reached to the final round though has been announced to be one of the “Best Presentation” teams.

Watcharawit, A BART LAB Member passed his Master Defense on TKR Surgical Robot Project

On June 28, 2011, at BME Dept: Mr. Watcharawit Saensupho held his thesis defense for his Master degree in Biomedical Engineering on the topic of “Design and Development on A Surgical Robot for Total Knee Replacement Application.” He is then continuing his Ph.D. study at the Department of Biomedical Engineering, Mahidol University.

ThaiCom RoboCamp 2011 by BART LAB

On May 12-15, 2011, ThaiCom Foundation and BART LAB (Center for Biomedical and Robotics Technology) organized a robot educational camp,  ‘ThaiCom RoboCamp 2011,’ at Mahidol University, Salaya. 50 high school students from 32 high schools were selected to join the workshop. At the end of the camp, 5 high school students were carefully selected to be the Thailand’s representatives to join the World RoboCup Junior Rescue Robot Leauge to be held in Istanbul, Turkey on July 5-11, 2011.

BART LAB Rescue Team won the 1st Place at RoboCup Japan Open 2011 as the Second Year Consecutively

On May 2-5, 2011, at Osaka, Japan, BART LAB Rescue Team with 2 Robots and 16 members to attend the RoboCup Japan Open 2011, Rescue Robot League. There were 12 teams in the competition, local and only one foreign team, ‘BART LAB Rescue’. Important Japanese teams included ‘Shinobi’ from Kyoto University, ’09 Japan Champion and ‘Nexis-R’ A.K.A. ‘NU-Tech R’ from Nagaoka University, ’07-’08 Japan Champion.
BART LAB Rescue Team won the Rescue Robot Championship as the second time, consecutively. BART LAB Rescue had lead since the first round with three 15-minute missions with the total scores of 210, while the second and third places (Nexis-R and Shinobi) received the scores of 75 and 70, respectively. The final round was a sudden dead run of 25-minute mission with a new improvement of arena and rules to fit with real experience from the Japan Earthquake and Tsunami in this year. BART LAB Rescue and Nexis-R were only two teams to be able to make the scores, while BART LAB Rescue could make the scores as twice of the Nexis-R. This lead to BART LAB Rescue Team to become the Champion in Japan Open 2011 for Rescue Robot League as the second time consecutively.
Among the Japanese teams, a few Japanese robots were attempted to perform in the real Japan earthquake locations in Sendai. BART LAB Rescue Team was supported to join the RoboCup Japan Open 2011 by ‘ThaiCom Foundation’ as the main sponsor and ‘Jele’ as the combined sponsor.

Four BART LAB Members Passed the Master Defends for Thesis and Proposal

On March 23 and 28, 2011, Chawaphol Derekwattana, Vera Sa-Ing and Woratit Onprasert held their thesis defends for the Master Degree in Biomedical Engineering at Mahidol University. The thesis titles were “Design and Development of a Novel Laparosopic Robotic System (MU-LAPAROBOT)” for Chawaphol, “Development of An Image-Guided Endoscopic Robot for Computer-Assisted Surgery” for Vera and “Novel Calibration Algorithms for Percutaneous Ultrasound-Guided Breast Biopsy” for Woratit. On March 28, another BART LAB member, Supawat Saeung, passed his thesis proposal defend in the topic of “Development of the Steady Hand for Orthopedic Surgery in Drilling Application.”

BART LAB Member Spends A 6-Month Research Exchanging at the Johns Hopkins University, USA.

On March 9, 2011, Piyawan Moonjaita departed Thailand for attending a 6-month research exchanging at the LCR/CISST, Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, Maryland, USA. She will work on a research topic of “Image Overlay Device with MRI Compatibility,” under guidance of Prof. Iulian Iordachita. 

NSTDA Senior Advisor, Dr. Thajchayapong Visited BART LAB

On February  25, 2010, Prof. Dr. Pairash Thajchayapong, Senior Advisor, National Science and Technology Development Agency of Thailand (NSTDA), paid a visit at BART LAB, Mahidol University.

Mahidol BME Open House at Digital Gateway, Siam Square, Bangkok

On February 26-27, 2011, Department of Biomedical Engineering, Mahidol University held a research exhibition of the Thailand’s first class of BME undergraduate program at the Digital Gateway, Siam Square, Bangkok. The exhibition covers their senior research projects under the cooperation with Thai BME Consortium, NASTDA and TRIDI. Dr. Pairash Thajchayapong, NSTDA and Dr. Supoj Tienwut, TRIDI gave short speeches at the opening ceremony. Undergraduate students working under supervision at BART LAB also attended the exhibition. Project #1: Non-Invasive Colonocope Tracking Using Electromegnatic Field by Mr.Karat  Thanaboonkong and Mr.Phipat Rata-aporn and Project #2:Haptic Interaction for Training in Basic Abdominal Wall Surgery by Ms. Nantida Nillahoot  and Ms. Ratanaporn Pochanakorn.

PIP/BART LAB Members Passed the Proposal Defend for Collaborated with Project Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago.

On January 17, 2011, Nattaporn Intawachirarat and Wirawat Sirisopha have presented and passed their proposal defends. The topics are "Toe Clearance During Free Swing of a Transemoral Prosthetic Leg: Polycentric Knee Vs. Ankle Dorsiflexion" and "A Study of Rotary-Brake Design for Utilizing in Motorized Upper Limb Prosthesis", respectively. Dr. Jonathon Sensinger, a committee, attends the defends from Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago and Northwestern University via tele-conference system.

LCSR/CISST Hopkins and BART LAB collaboration on PERK Station, An Image Overlay Device.

On January 12, 2011, Prof. Iulian Iordachita and Prof. Gabor Fitchtinger, LCSR/CISST at Johns Hopkins University have sent Miss Paweena U-Thainual, a Ph.D. student from Hopkins to visit and technology transfer on PERK Station. PERK Station is an Image Overlay Device for training purpose by mapping a slice of CT Image on a patient for guiding the needle insertion process. Prof. Iordachita and Prof. Fitchtinger allows Paweena to develop a PERK Station system, and leaves it for BART LAB research.

On October 15, 2010, Prof. Norman Tien, Dean, School of Engineering, Case Western Reserve University and delegates paid a visit at BART LAB, BCI LAB and Department of Biomedical Engineering, Mahidol University.

Mahidol University's President and TRIDI Paid a Visit at BART LAB

On October 7, 2010, Prof. Piyasakol Sakolsatayadorn, Mahidol University's President and Prof. Krissanapong Kiratikara, Board Chairman of TRIDI, lead TRIDI delegates to visit the BART LAB. TRIDI has agreed to support equipments and facilities to Department of Biomedical Engineering and BART LAB for the budget of 30 Million Baht (1 Million USD) in the next 3 years.

Dr. Jackrit, As the President of Thai Robotics Society, Visit Mitsubishi Factory During the Asian Robotics Society Summit Meeting in Nagoya, Japan.

On September 22, 2010, Dr. Jackrit Suthakorn, as the president of Thai Robotics Society, has joint the Asian Robotics Society Summit Meeting in Nagoya, Japan. During the meeting, he pays a visit to several factories which are strongly using robotic technology in their manufacturing lines. The factories include Toyota Motomachi Factory, Mitsubishi Motor Factory and Denso Factory.

SCG Administrators Visit BART LAB

On September 6, 2010, Dr. Snoh Unakul leads SCG (Siam Cement Group) Administrators and scientists to visit BART LAB. They were impressed by our current Medical Robotics and Computer-Integrated Surgery Research. BART LAB will be supported by SCG to develop a prototyped EOD robot for Marines in their missions.

BART LAB Rescue won the 2nd Place at World RoboCup Rescue 2010 in Singapore

On June 19-26, 2010, BART LAB Rescue attended the Rescue Robot League at the World RoboCup 2010 held in Singapore. There were about more than 20 teams, internationally, to attend the competition, including, Pelican United/ Japan, CASualty/Australia, MRL/Iran and a few Hi-Ranked Thai teams (“iRAP_Pro,” Past World Champion from 2009, “BART LAB Rescue,” Champion from TRR2009 and Japan Open 2010, and “SUCCESS,” Best-In-Class: Advanced Mobility from TRR2009).
BART LAB Rescue was advanced to the Semi-Final Round with other 9 teams, internationally, including the 2 Thai teams. The Semi-Final Round required 2 missions, and the results came out as followed: (No.1) iRAP_Pro (Score 465 Points/15 Victims), (No.2) BART LAB Rescue (Score 430/13 Victims) and (No.3) SUCCESS (Score 330/11 Victims). Therefore, only three Thai teams passed through the Final Round.

On the last day, the Final Run, BART LAB Rescue was not so lucky. After searched, found and reported the second victim, our Tele-Operation Robot was stuck in a big hole near by the wall. Anyway, after combining the scores from the Semi-Final Round and Final Round, BART LAB Rescue was happy enough to share the 2nd Place with SUCCESS, the other Thai team.

Prof. Kimura, Advisor of NU Tech-R team from Japan, was teasing when the Finalist Chart was posted, “It’s the Thailand Open at Singapore.” This sentence and the result proved our much higher standard of Thailand Rescue Robot Competitions, which were able to elevate standards of Thai Rescue Robot teams, and which were able to select the best qualified teams to attend the World Competitions, such as, World RoboCup 2010 in Singapore.

BART LAB Rescue won the first prize at RoboCup Japan Open 2010

On May 1-4, 2010 at Osaka, Japan: BART LAB Rescue team attended the Rescue League at RoboCup Japan Open 2010. There were 11 teams from Japan, [including, “CIT Pelican,” former World Champion ’01 - ’05, “Shinobi,” Japan Champion ’09, and “Nexis-R,” A.K.A. NU-Tech R, Japan Champion ’07-’08], a young team from Iran and BART LAB Rescue, Thailand Champion ’09.

There were three 15-minute missions in the first round. The first mission, BART LAB Rescue scored 142 points while the second rank, CIT Pelican, received only 27 points. After three missions, only 4 teams advanced to the final round, one from Thailand, BART LAB Rescue, and three from Japan, CIT Pelican, Shinobi, and Nexis-R.

The final round was a knock-out one mission with a longer length of time, 30 minutes. It was really closed. Japanese teams were at full performance, however, we were ready as well. BART LAB Rescue won the Japan Open Championship with the final run of 146 points left the second place about 50 points. BART LAB Rescue was only an international team to win a title for all leagues in the RoboCup Japan Open 2010. To attend the Japan Open, BART LAB Rescue was fully supported by the THAICOM Foundation for 2 consecutive years.

BART LAB Members visited Robotics Labs at NARA Institute of Science and Technology (NAIST)

On May 6, 2010 at Nara, Japan: After receiving the Rescue Robot Championship from Japan Open, BART LAB Members visited the Robotics Labs in Nara Institute of Science and Technology (NAIST). Professor Ogasawara, leader of robotics research group at NAIST (http://robotics.naist.jp) arranged a series of Lab Visit in several departments, including, famous android research collaborating with Kokoro.

Mahidol BME signed an MOU with UCLA Center for Small Bowel Disease for Research Collaboration
On April 17, 2010, Dr. Jackrit Suthakorn as the Chair, Department of Biomedical Engineering, Mahidol University has signed an MOU for research collaboration and exchanging program with the UCLA Center for Small Bowel Dieses for Research and National Innovation Agency (NIA). Dr. Kunying Kalaya Sophonpanich, Minister of Science and Technology of Thailand has signed her autograph as the witness of the MOU.

During April 15-17, 2010, Dr. Jackrit Suthakorn, BART LAB Director, and Dr. Yodchanan Wongsawat joined with a group of researchers from National Innovation Agency (NIA), National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA) and Ministry of Science and Technology of Thailand visited UCLA for a number labs, including, Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, UCLA Center for Advanced Surgical and Interventional Technology (CASIT), California Nanotechnology Institute, and other research labs in Electrical Engineering.

Prof. Peter Zelimann and his students from Germany visited BART LAB

BART LAB Rescue is the winner for 2009 Thailand Rescue Robot Championship (TRR2009).

On Dec 10, 2009, Years of research and developments on rescue robots, version-to-version of developed rescue robots, it has paid off. BART LAB won the first place and Best-In-Class: Autonomy in TRR2009 among the 100 local competitors, and 6 world’s leading teams; Nu Tech-R (Nagaoka University of Technology – Japan), NiiT-Blue (Niigata Institute of Technology – Japan), Jacobs University (Jacobs University – Germany), Pasargad (Amirkabir University of Technology – Iran), Resquake (K.N. Toosi University of Technology – Iran), CASualty (University of New South Wales – Australia). More importantly, the World RoboCup Rescue Organizing Committee perform judging at the Final Round of Thailand Rescue Robot Championship. It was one of the highest honors BART LAB Rescue team had received. (BART LAB Rescue teams has won the Best-In-Class: Autonomy in TRR2008, the second place and SICE award at Japan Open 2009 Rescue League.)

World Experts on Biomedical Engineering and BioRobotics Visited BART LAB.

On Dec 17, 2009, Prof. Brian Davies (Imperial College, London), Prof. Yongmin Kim (University of Washington, Seatle), Prof. Andrew Laines (Columbia University, New York), Prof. Holland Cheng (University of California, Davis), and Prof. Peter Engelhardt (Helsinki University of Tech, Helsinki) paid an hour tech tour at BART LAB. Several nice comments and suggestions were made to us. Prof. Davies is the world’s famous research to develop the “Acrobot”, an orthopedic surgical robot which is the first robot to perform on the human. Prof. Kim is the past president of IEEE Engineering on Medicine and Biology Society (EMBS). His contributions are very well-known on portable ultrasound machines. Prof. Laines is the famous professor for Medical Imaging, especially, Image Enhancement using Wavelet Applications on MR, Ultrasound, and Nuclear Images. Prof. Cheng and Prof. Engelhardt are famous on molecular imaging, especially, living cells.

The Chair of World RoboCup Rescue Organizing Committee, Mr. Adam Jacoff, paid a visit at BART LAB.

On Dec 15, 2009, Mr. Adam Jacoff paid a visit at BART LAB. He has seen how BART LAB conduct research on Rescue Robots from version to version. Rescue robot reviews, design and simulation, construction, experimental set up and results. Mr. Jacoff is the father of Rescue Robot Competition. He has brought robot testing methods to the World RoboCup more than 10 years ago. He is now the Trustee of RoboCup Federation, and the Chair of World RoboCup Rescue Organizing Committee. He works full-time at the Intelligent Systems Division, National Institute of Standard and Technology (NIST), Washington, D.C., USA.

Back-To-Back Events: TRR2009, IRRW2009 and ISBME2009

on Dec 7-10, 2009, People of BART LAB organized and involved in back-to-back academic events, 2009 Thailand Rescue Robot Championship at The Mall Dept Store International Rescue Robot Workshop at Amari Orchid Pattaya on Dec 11-14, and 2009 IEEE International Symposium on Biomedical Engineering at A Le Meridian Plaza Athenee on Dec 15-17. The co-sponsors for TRR2009, and IRRW2009 are SCG and Thai Robotics Society. The major co-technical sponsors for ISBME2009 are IEEE and ThaiEMBS. Dr. Jackrit Suthakorn was the Program Chair for these three events.

Famous Prof. Shugen Ma from Ritsumeikan, Japan, has a tech tour at BART LAB.

On Nov 30, 2009, Prof. Shugen Ma, from Ritsumeikan University, Kyoto, Japan has visited the BART LAB. Prof. Ma is the world famous robotics research on Bio-Inspired Robotics. He is one of the most important students of Prof. Shigeo Hirose of TITech.

New International Exchanging Student from Germany

Joshua Lee Yik Ching, a Master’s student from Furtwangen University of Applied Science, Germany, has joined the BART LAB as a exchange graduate student for six months in order to complete his thesis research. His research will involve "Performance Evaluation of Aurora Tracking System".

BART LAB and Thai Robotics Society organize the "ROBOT AND AUTOMATION PAVILLION" at National S&T Fair 2009.
Dr. Jackrit Suthakorn, Thai Robotics Society and BART LAB members are the main organizer of the "ROBOT AND AUTOMATION PAVILLION" at National Science and Technology Fair 2009 at Muangthong Thani from August 8-23, 2009. The Pavilion includes Demonstrations of Surgical Robots, Humanoid Robot Soccer, Rescue Robots, Entertainment Robots and more.

Auranuch (Ney) Passes Her Master Degree’s Defense, and is leaving for PhD Study at Columbia University.
on August 11, 2009, Auranuch (Ney) Lorsakul, A BART LAB Member, has passed the defense for her Master’s Degree in Biomedical Engineering at the Mahidol University. The title is “Development of Algorithms in Surgical Guidance System Using Image Processing Techniques.” She will pursue her PhD degree at the Department of Biomedical Engineering, Columbia University, New York, USA, starting in this Fall 2009.

2 New Research Scientists Join BART LAB
Dr. Danai Laksameethanasan and Dr. Niramon Ruangpayoongsak has joined the Center of Biomedical and Robotics Technology (BART LAB) as the Center Full-Time Faculty Members from May and August 2009, respectively. Dr. Danai receives his Ph.D. from University of Helsinki, Finland, with a background in Microscopy Imaging, and Dr. Niramon received her Dr.-Ing from University of Siegen, Germany, with a background in Image-Guided Robotic Systems.

Dr. Jackrit Suthakorn Leads Thai Rescue Robot Team to Win World RoboCup Rescue’s Title in Austria as the 4th Year in the Row.
Dr. Jackrit Suthakorn, Thai Rescue Robot Team’s Leader and the Thai Robotics Society’s President, leads the Thai Rescue Robot Team to win the World Champion Title at the World RoboCup Rescue in Austria. This year, iRAP_Pro from King Monkut’s University of Techonology North Bangkok, is the Thailand’s representative team to perform their exceptional abilities to the audiences and other international rescue robot teams from around the world.

BART LAB Rescue Won SICE Award and The 1st Runner Up at RoboCup Japan Open 2009

BART LAB Rescue team brought 2 rough-terrain robots (TeleOp III and AutoBot I) attended the RoboCup Rescue League at the RoboCup Japan Open 2009 held at Kyocera Dome, Osaka, during May 7-10, 2009. BART LAB Rescue won the SICE Award from the “Society of Instrumentation and Control Engineering” for the Robot’s Excellent System Development in Displaying Function of Searched-Information. Moreover, BART LAB Rescue also received the “1st Runner Up” position for the RoboCup Rescue League.

Miss Auranuch Lorsakul (Ney) and Miss Sureerat Reaungamornrat (Ja) have been accepted to pursue their Ph.D. degrees at the  Columbia University and Johns Hopkins University, respectively, in this Fall (2009). Auranuch will be working with Prof. Andrew F. Laine, Heffner Biomedical Imaging Lab, Dept of Biomedical Engineering, Columbia University, New York. While, Sureerat will pursue her graduate studies at the Dept of Computer Science, Johns Hopkins University, Maryland.

BART LAB Rescue will attend the RoboCup Japan Open 2009

BART LAB Rescue Robotics Team, 16 members + 3 robots, will attend the RoboCup Japan Open 2009 as the Thailand’s representative in return to ‘NU-Tech R,’ Japanese Rescue Robot League’s Champion to attend the Thailand Rescue Robot Championship 2008 (TRR2008) in the last December. BART LAB Rescue won the Best in Class: Autonomy, and hold the 2nd best overall score from 77 Thai teams in the TRR2008. The traveling fees will be mainly supported by Thaicom Foundation. The RoboCup Japan Open 2009 will be held in Kyecera Dome, Osaka, Japan, from May 6 - 10, 2009.

World Famous Neuro-Roboticist, "Prof. Joel Burdick" of CAL TECH has visited BART LAB

On February 25, 2009, Prof. Joel Burdick of California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, USA, has visited BART LAB after performing his role as a plenary speaker at the IEEE ROBIO 2008. Prof. Burdick is academically related to Dr. Jackrit Suthakorn. Prof. Gregory S. Chirikjian of Johns Hopkins University, Dr. Suthakorn's PhD Advisor, was Prof. Burdick's first PhD student. Follow along with Ehsan Mihankhah, TC WorldRoboCup Rescue and Resquake Robotics Team's Leader, Luca Frasson, PhD Student under guidance of Prof.F.R. Baena and Prof. Brian Davies at the Imperial College, UK, and Hisashi Mizumoto, PhD Student from University of Electro-Communication, Japan.

Auranuch is working on 4-D Ultrasound Project at the Columbia University

Auranuch Lorsakul, a BART LAB member, is currently working on 4-D Ultrasound Project under collaboration with / guidance of Prof. Andrew F. Laine at the Dept of Biomedical Engineering, Columbia University, New York. Auranuch Lorsakul is spending her 8 months as an exchanging researcher there.

‘BART LAB Rescue’ won the Best Autonomy Award from Thaialnd Rescue Robot Championship 2008

BART LAB Rescue Robotics Team won the Best Autonomy Award, over 80 teams from national international, in the Thailand Rescue Robot Championship 2008. The competition was held at the Thailand National Indoor Stadium, Bangkok, on December 13 - 14, 2008.

Co-Inventor of Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT), Prof. K. R. Rao visited BART LAB

Prof. Rao, co-inventor of Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) , based technology of JPEG, visited BART LAB on November 11, 2008. Prof. Rao is the main author of Multimedia Communication Systems Text Book, and is currently with University of Texas, Arlington.

New International Exchanging Student from France

 Claire Guerineay studied in biomedical instrument field at the Ecole Superieure D' Ingenieurs De Luminy University. She spent time doing a research here for 3 months from April to July 2551 in the topic “The Development of Monofilment for patients whose nervous system are affected from diabetes ”.

April 2, 2008: BART LAB Intelligent Vehicle Team advances to the final round TIVC 2008.

BART LAB’s Intelligent Vehicle Team, “BART LAB Vehiculum,” passed through the final round in the 2008 Thai Intelligent Vehicle Challenge organized by Thai Robotics Society, Asian Institute of Technology and Seagate. Every car in the TIVC 2008 must autonomously drive along the road in the Bangkok Racing Circuit by itself without human-control. These cars must have their own navigation and controlling systems installed. A vintage Mercedes-Benz was used as the platform, and was modified the steering, braking and accelerating systems.  The Vehiculum was mainly navigating by Computer Vision system, combined of a stereo-camera (Bumble-Bee®), and two left/right FireWire cameras for emergency control. Besides, the Vehiculum was also integrated with a bunch of GPSs and e-compass to combine their sensing information with the Computer Vision system.

Feb 20, 2008: Thai Robotics Society held Committee Meeting at BART LAB

Thai Robotics Society’s committee have visited and held their meeting at BART LAB on February 20, 2008. Attendances included: Prof. Prabhas and Dr. Witaya of Chulalongkorn University, Dr. Vara, Dr.Sthaporn and Dr.Siripun of KMITNB, Dr.Thavida of FIBO, KMUTT, Dr. Somyod of KMITL, Prof. Panya of Kasetsart University, Dr. Kridiwat of Royal Thai Navy, and Dr.Jackrit (BART LAB Director and President of TRS) and Dr.Warakorn of BART LAB, Mahidol University. The meeting was to discuss several TRS agenda, including organizing yearly major robotics competitions, such as, Thailand Rescue Robot, RoboCup Thailand Championship, and other events (see more details in www.trs.or.th).

BART LAB Director, Dr Jackrit Suthakorn was Selected as a President of Thai Robotics Society for 2 Years.

June 14-15, 2007 CRIT 2007 at Rose Garden

BART LAB held the organization of the TRS conference on robotics and industrial technology under the cooperative with FIBO (Institute of field robotics, KMUTT). Even it was a small national conference with 50 audiences, successfully attendance occurred though the holding period. Two BART LAB members, Mr. B. Kittiwut and Mr. S. Jantarajit won the best paper awards on “ Inverse Kinematic System for rotary protein manipulation” and “Medical Tool Positioning System Using Ultrasonic”, respectively.     

May 23, 2007 at the Final Round Thailand Intelligent Vehicle Challenge

The BART LAB Vehiculum has finished the final competition with the distance 162.04 metres in 5:39 minutes, and won the Excellent Art Work Award. The vehicle is capable detecting the road edge and guiding itself to go along with the roadway autonomously. The vehicle is equipped with several computer vision systems , sensing systems, and on-board processing unit (PC and ARM-7 Microcontroller).
